AfriTech Organic Leather Co Ltd, founded in 2021 by Dr. Cecilia China, is a pioneering social enterprise driven by a mission to transform Tanzania's leather industry. We bring innovative research findings to life, addressing the needs of SMEs in leather processing. Our focus is on sustainable, ecofriendly practices, challenging traditional norms for efficiency, environmental responsibility, and cost-effectiveness. We advocate non-toxic tanning, ethical sourcing, a circular economy, thereby creating green jobs for Youth and Women, all while crafting high-quality leather products. Origins of AfriTech.Organic Leather
Founding Vision
AfriTech Organic Leather Co. Ltd. finds its roots in the visionary decision of Dr. Cecilia China, an innovative CEO, determined to bring her research and development efforts to fruition by establishing a business in 2021 and latergraduted to the startup company in 2024.
Innovative Eco-Friendly Approach
Since its inception, AfriTech Organic Leather has introduced a range of product lines, all developed through a pioneering eco-friendly approach. The company has also played a vital role in providing services to the leather industry.
Birth and Early Journey
Identifying Industry Challenges
The company’s journey began with a noble mission in 2017, as Dr. Cecilia, a researcher at TIRDO, conducted a survey among SMEs in the leather industry. This survey unveiled a multitude of challenges plaguing the leather sector, prominent one being limited access to eco friendly technologies, supplies and technical expertise, necessary to meet stringent quality and environmental standards.
The Genesis of Innovation
Motivated by the desire to address these challenges, Dr. Cecilia embarked on a tireless journey. From 2017 to 2020, she dedicated herself to research and development, resulting in the creation of a groundbreaking prototype—an innovative machine for producing organic tanning agents and an eco-friendly leather processing recipe.
Innovation Recognition
The prototype’s excellence was recognized when it received the Best Innovation Award during the National Innovation Competition in 2020 and was granted a small patent (utility model ) number TZ/U/2022/00003.
Empowering SMEs and Global Expansion
Collaboration with SMEs
Under the funding from Tanzania Government through COSTECH and Swedish government through Sida, in 2022, AfriTech Organic Leather initiated collaboration with a cluster of 15 SMEs. These SMEs were equipped with the technical skills required to utilize the prototype for producing organic tanning agents and incorporating them into the leather and leather product manufacturing processes.
Expanding Market Reach
Simultaneously, the company introduced these SMEs’ products to its market networks locally and extended its reach to a global community.
